Internet Companies Demand Opera to Blacklist Illegal Websites

The issue is likely an effect of the company's acquisition by Qihoo 360 earlier this year.

Opera Software are considering creating a filtering system for users attempting to access torrent websites and other restricted material through Opera VPN and Opera Turbo. Russian news outlet Kommersant reports that Opera has already been in talks about fully restricting access to illegal websites, even when they are accessed through Opera Turbo.

The issue primarily stems from Russian watchdog company Roskomnadzor banning access to LinkedIn, since the website apparently violated a russian law, stating that user data may only be stored within servers located inside the country.

Internet service providers are well aware of Opera's current workarounds for browsing blocked websites, which is why the restriction may take place in countries outside of Russia as well. More recent claims suggest the UK is also planning on heavier web supervision, making it a high-ranking next area for this Opera update.
