Windows To Get Major Design Overhaul

Codenamed project NEON, the update will reportedly see the OS in a much clearer, modern look.

Microsoft is reportedly establishing new UI guidelines for the future of Windows. The design language is known to be referred to as Microsoft Design Language 2 (MDL2). The update will likely be rolled out directly into a Windows 10 update at some point next year.

The main elements users can expect are new icons, switches, toggles, pickers and dialog windows. The first MDL was Metro, so it's questionable what the next iteration/version of the design language will be. The general opinion among users is that Windows does need a UI overhaul in order to meet the consumer experience design standards of the industry.

A rough estimate of the release date of MDL2 will be Q3 of 2017.
